The Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila, Inc. instituted another milestone program for the preservation of life and environment just recently following the Tree planting, Organic Vegetable Farming and Medical & Dental Mission at Barangay San Roque, Bauan, Batangas.
In cooperation with the International Coastal CleanUP Organization, the Ocean Conservancy (ICC), the Municipality of Bauan, Barangay San Roque Local Government and AG&P Foundation Inc., The Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila Inc. through its Executive Director RENATO M. ALARCON, gathered 15 volunteers to scour the one (1km) kilometer Tabok river banks of San Roque, Bauan.
A total of chuck garbage, 1,568 pounds (708 kilos), were gathered by volunteers in 42 duffle bags from the coast of San Andres through the river dividing Barangays Manghinao and San Roque. Disposed were shop-plastics, recede trees, weeds, papers, foods left-over, composed & hygiene products, bottles, cups, ice cream containers, children’s pamphers, aluminum beverage cans, industrial wastes and personal items.
Mr. Rosulo P. Carag led the AG&P volunteers to the outskirts of ‘Tabok’ river on September 20, 2008 from 6AM to 11AM. Barangay Captain Leopoldo R. Salcedo joined the team with AG&P Carlos P. Hufana (OIC) and Rogelio Buenafe (Safety), making sure that every inch of the tavern was inspected.
Mr. Roger Salamanca assisted Mr. Carag in weighing each duffle bag while Mr. Ben Aclan shoots documentary pictures for the foundation to mark.
The AG&P shore and coastal cleaning has always been a part of AG&P’s commitment to environment protection and community relations. Under the guidance of VP for Operations Roberto S. Paglinawan, HSE Manager Reynaldo S. Mendoza and Community Relation’s Manager General Corona, AG&P makes sure that the whole 64 hectare company surrounding is well kept.
During the clean up, the team, headed by Mr. Carag discovered 12 turtle eggs, believed to be from the endangered species of the ‘horn faced-turtle’ which can be found only in Asia, buried under three feet of sandy side of the tabok river.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were immediately informed and were invited to come. Although DENR did not come Ms. Jocelyn Lozada (DENR Forester) and Sally LLagas (DENR protection of natural habitat) counseled the team on prime steps of tending the discovery.
6 turtles hatched (September 19 and 20) and immediately escaped the rushing river and five were retrieved for safe keeping by Barangay Captain Leo R. Salcedo. Another hatched in captivity and was immediately soaked in river water to preserve its natural habitat.
The eggs and ‘horn faced’ turtle are under the Barangay’s nursing at present time.
