MEDICAL & DENTAL MISSION 3 (Pap-Smear (papsmeer extra tune)

October 9, 2009 – Friday, Bauan, Batangas – The rains poured heavily the night before our mission. I was in silent prayer asking the Lord to clear the skies for the two thousand residents of the three largest barangays of Bauan in the province of Batangas. Before the sun rises 'quarter to half' the Manghinao mountains, the rains stopped dispensing and we were able to set up the vocation venue. 45 tables, 250 durable chairs and a large "L shaped" scaffold canopy and three classrooms were set. The crowd came 30 minutes after we fixed the venue and the rains showered our patients a little more. I thought we were going to postpone the mission but God has His ways of granting the wishes of those who believe.
Dr. Victor Bejer, Head of the Municipal Health Office came earliest with his MHO staff of doctors, pharmacists, volunteers and assistants. He also brought with him 6 boxes of assorted medicines for the mission. The Bauan Doctor's Hospital nurses and volunteers came next then Bauan Medical Society and the Bauan General Hospital nurses. There were at least 60 volunteers in Manghinao Proper Elementary School who shared their Medical and Dental expertise and 90 more who assisted the doctors and dentists. The Provincial Health Office came a little late but was able to supply 6 boxes of Medicines for the residents of Bauan, many of which were also sequestered by PHO back to their office after the mission.
Students joyfully watch us prepare as they sing in harmony a song from 'ASIN' album, "Kapaligiran", which was obviously rehearsed to enthuse AG&PFI team and incoming guests.
Added Services Papsmear is one of the most important examination a woman should have on regularly basis. It is a test that can prevent invasive cancer of the womb. Unfortunately, like most medical tests, 100% accuracy can not be claimed but if a woman present herself regularly for testing (preferably annually) the likelihood of her developing invasive cancer of the womb is very slight. It is a life saving procedure! There are different types of womb cancers: Cancer of the cervix (cervical cancer), mouth of the womb. Also known by its scientific name; cervical carcinoma. Cancer of the body of the womb (corpus cancer, endometrial cancer). The scientific name is endometrial carcinoma. Rare types for example muscle cancers known scientifically as sarcomas. It is important to understand that the 'papsmeer' is only reliable in the diagnosis of cancer of the mouth of the womb, but the latter is the most common type of womb cancer The 'Papsmeer' check up and testing were AG&PFI added services for patients incorporated with the Medical and Dental mission. 45 females were benefited from barangays San Roque, Manghinao Proper and Manghinao Uno. Each Pap test lasted for 15 minutes and all were given professional advises by volunteer doctors and free medicines by AG&PFI. "I wanted to know if I have cancer or not! I will fly to Japan next month and this free check up will clear my mind from thoughts of overlooked ailments. I can not pay for expensive medical exams like this. Mabuti na lang libre ito. Thanks to Chairman Boy Abraham for giving me a stub", a patient said during an interview. "I am a mother of three, my husband is in New Caledonia sent by AG&P, I have barely enough money to buy food and medicine so Papsmeer is last in my list of priorities but I know I need this. Thanks to Barangay Captain Leo R. Salcedo, I was able to avail of these tests and free medicines!" said an alias 'Marina' from San Roque, Bauan. "Sus!!! Dalaga pa po ako. May edad na lang (47 years old single). Eh kwan kasi… Libre kasi at palaging may UTI ako kaya gusto ko sanang magpa Pap-Smear test", a lady from Manghinao Uno explained pointing on her private part. She usually develops urinary track infections which doctors fail to succinctly explain. This was her only way to avail of free 'papsmeer' test thanks to Manghinao Uno Chairman Romel Basilan. Foster Wheeler Ex-Pat wives joins Mission Inez Bly, Lynne Burke and Keely Muse, wives of AG&P Clients, Foster Wheeler Project joined the mission and were assigned to key responding units particularly with OBgyne, General Medicines and Pedia clinics. Ms. Muse on the other hand became ambassador of goodwill to AG&PFI and Foster Wheeler where she tenaciously walked, talked and socialized with people easing the burdens of waiting from long lines and pains from teeth extractions. The three foreign volunteers touched the hearts of each parent, teacher and child thus inspiring hope and altruism through this mission. The patients hurriedly fell in line to avail of Foster Wheeler's assistance, seeing new faces and white skins in the mission were not too often. "Dito na lang kami pipila kasi sosyal!" exclaimed a patient as she squeeze in line with her 1 year old daughter. Services The most ministered clinic was the Pedia close to 700 children were treated, examined and given aid. General Medicine and Surgery came next followed by EENT and other physical and internal complaints. The Dental procedures were done in two classrooms adding up to at least 150 recorded (with stub) extractions and approximately 100 unregistered walk-ins. The patients were given free anesthesia, medicines and anti-biotics on their way home. The Pap-Smear examinations with medical referrals and take home medications were introduced for the first time by AG&PFI to the community. The Missionaries In cooperation with the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific Company of Manila, Inc., BHFY Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Municipal Health Office, Philippine National Red Cross, Bauan Medical Society, Batangas Dental and Bauan Dental Societies, Bauan Doctor's Hospital, Bauan General Hospital, Dr. Hornilla's team of Dentists, Regional Health Units, Municipal Social Welfare Office, Provincial Health Office, Foster Wheeler wives, Barangay Health workers and walk-in Volunteers counting to 230, AG&PFI's Medical, Dental and Papsmeer Mission successfully attended to 2045 below par of three major barangays of Bauan, Batangas. Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific hosts Blood letting to 96.

Writer: AG&PFI news desk Bauan, Batangas – Responding to the demand of blood, due to scarcity of donors, the Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila, Inc. in cooperation with the AG&P Foundation, BHFY Multi-purpose Cooperative and Philippine National Red Cross, initiated a blood letting, blood donation campaign which were participated by 122 willing candidates composed of trainees, AG&P employees, Cooperative staff and AG&P heads & Managers.

The first batch of donors came early, at 7AM, August 28, 2009 to be registered with PNRC. With 12 folding beds, AG&PFI converted its welding theory classroom into a clinic where the extractions were made while being supervised by AG&P Physician, Dra. Linabelle R. Panopio (AG&P Clinic), Dra. Basilisa Turno, (PNRC Medical Head) and Estela Peñalosa (PNRC Medical Technologist).
The Philippine National Red Cross started the activity by selecting donors through interviews and physical examinations. Blood pressures were taken and weights were checked. PNRC distributed 'Blood donor interview sheets' containing questions that focused on personal issues and about patient's medical history, from among the 122 only 96 were qualified. Each donor was given a chance to decide whether to voluntarily contribute blood or refuse. After the screening, those who were elected where sent inside the classroom-clinic and were laid down/seated for blood letting. After the 15 minutes procedure, each was given a PNRC RED CROSS blood card, indicating their blood type (defined by color), date and amount of blood drawn and their names, which entitled them to get a free blood whenever and wherever they need them.
AG&PFI Executive Director, Renato M. Alarcon, presided over the 25 AG&PFI volunteers' who assisted the 12 PNRC nurses and the 4 BHFY Cooperative team mates in the blood donation and letting campaign.
The Father is in need of three bags of Blood. An engineering employee, Ginalyn G. Quinio, having been disqualified to become a donor, approached Executive Director Alarcon to ask if she may be permitted to donate blood despite her ineligibility because her Father needs blood for transfusion which was scheduled on August 31, 2009, Monday.
Aurio L. Quinio, Father of Ginalyn, had been suffering from Nephrities, for three years, where only 10% of one from two (2) kidneys was working. The father needs at least 1,500 cc of 'Hemoglobin', also commonly known as Red Blood Corpucells, to alleviate the paleness and depletion of her crimson cells in the blood. The Platelet is likewise diminishing but can be contained once the three (3) bags of blood were infused in his system.
Mr.Renato M. Alarcon encouraged Ginalyn to prepare the father's hospitalization as AG&PFI will guarantee three (3) bags of Blood for his speedy recovery, even if she has earlier been disqualified from donating. The blood shall be delivered to the hospital where Ginalyn's father will be confined without any expense from the family. PNRC Chief of AG&PFI campaign, Dra. Turno, seconded the commitment and gave the engineer her assurance of blood. "This is practically the reason why we conducted the Blood Letting and Donation campaign. This will be our success story and this will be an inspiration we can share to the most needy" Mr. Alarcon exclaimed.
Richard A. Reyes, Head of the AG&P Resources Management, also donated 450 cc of his type "O" to the cooperative with the purpose of saving another person's life. According to Dra. Linabelle R. Panopio, the procedure conducted inside the Technical School is admirable since everything was prepared and done in synchronized cooperation and professionalism. Dr. Michael Cayetano, Chief AG&P Physician, was in frequent communication with all his staff nurses and Dra. Panopio, as his 'alter ego' all day long which contributed to the success of the mission conducted by AG&PFI and the BHFY Multi-purpose Cooperative, (represented by Miss Marife H. Manongsong, AG&P Personnel Manager).
Students donating: "The huge number of students donating from AG&PFI was the culminating factor which made the activity so successful not setting apart the 29 Engineering employees" this was the statement from Marketing and Information Officer Ben S. Aclan concluding a head count of providers. Thirty two (32) mixed welding students and eight (8) pipe fitting willingly lined up to donate for the AG&PFI causes. Aside from students 6 combined AG&P teachers and staff also donated with the rest of guests and volunteers.
The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) were so delighted with the huge number of contributions accumulated after the days activity and vouched to return on September 22, 2009 for the next scheduled BHFY Multi-Purpose Cooperative/AG&PFI with the Batangas Regional Hospital, as additional Partner, blood letting and blood donation day.

AG&P FOUNDATION PLANTS 2000 TREES TO SAVE MOTHER EARTH

July 2, 2009 – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) joined hands in planting 2000 trees with AG&P Company of Manila Foundation, Inc. and the Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila, Inc. in Sta. Maria, Bauan, Batangas in collaboration with the Barangay Officials on the theme "Nurture the Nature, Adopt a Tree program". The second year Environmental Protection campaign of AG&P foundation marked its 4000th trees planted in Bauan, in the province of Batangas. Seeing ahead a greener and more environment friendly society, AG&P Foundation sewed the mountains of Sta. Maria with 1.2 feet tall Mahogany trees in 1.5X1.5 flora expanse. Just last year, the foundation planted 700, 1.5X1.5, mahogany trees along the banks of Tabok River and grew 7 feet on its anniversary on July 1, 2009. The River is now an ecology park visited by thousands of people and is being protected by AG&P Foundation. The two (2) hectare land owned by Adoracion Bagsit Calingasan was temporarily leased to AG&P for 5 years without fee in support of the project with understanding that the latter will plant 2000 trees, care for the trees planted and have their property included in AG&P's list of mountains to adopt. The community of Sta. Maria, headed by Pangulong Restie Agena, invited 60 residents and volunteers to set the trees on the Bagsit land and tendered the adjoining lots placing tree guards on each tree planted. The tremendous pour of volunteers came early as they waited for AG&P Managers and the main guest-of-honor to commence the July 2, 2009 ceremonial tree planting under the new theme, "Adopt a mountain, Adopt a tree" program, still under the previous focus. AG&P Vice-President Roberto Paglinawan delivered a 10 minutes speech thanking volunteers, the Barangay officials and PENRO for the huge support each gave in saving and nurturing mother earth. He claimed responsibility in protecting Sta. Maria mountains as he initiated the first planting. Trees were solicited by Ben S. Aclan (Marketing) and Renato M. Alarcon (Executive Director) TREE PLANTING July 2, 2009

AG&P Foundation donates playground to Sta.Maria

6 O'clock in the morning of Thursday, May 14, 2009, the children of Sta. Maria converged at the east wing of their chapel, near the basketball court, along the sea shore, to line up and take turns riding the 6 seater swings, 4 seesaws, hang levers and steel castle mazes they described as the "Sta. Maria Recreation Park and Play Ground". For the first time Sta. Maria enjoyed camaraderie, Barangay informal meetings and constituent gatherings without formal invites because of the newly constructed playground donated by the AG&P Company of Manila Foundation, Inc. Fathers and Mothers brought their children to the park to escape the scourging heat of summer and exchange 'chit-chats' with 'manongs' and 'manangs', the usual Barangay folks, of the Sta. Maria. Barangay officials sat by the reams of breakwaters watching their citizens enjoy the luxury of a full facility piazza installed by AG&PFI as they themselves unwind seeing peace and serenity once more in the divided communities along the shores of Bauan. Mr. Renato M. Alarcon, Executive Director of the AG&P Company of Manila Foundation, Inc. donated the playground to Barangay Captain Restie Agena after the latter narrated stories of frustrations to meet harmony and agreement among his jurisdictional civic, due to cultural, regional and political differences. According to Mr. Alarcon, he saw the need to share with Barangay Sta. Maria some community recreation facilities to alleviate the intricacies in governance since Agena's Barangay falls also under AG&PFI's communal commitment. With humble intentions RMA visited Sta. Maria and surveyed the proposed locations. He instructed staffs to erect a full play facility in these areas which was delivered promptly on May 14th. May 28, 2009, the honorable head of the Barangay inaugurated the first of the proposed annual celebration of the playground's foundation. A traditional ceremonial ribbon cutting and blessing of the AG&PFI – Sta. Maria Recreation Park and Play Ground was solemnized with a Mass heard at 10AM followed by the lighting of candles, blessings then signing of a Memorandum of Acceptance (MOA). The event was witnessed by Vice-Mayor Romeo Bacong of the Municipality of Bauan, Municipal Councilor Bautista, some public officials, Restie Agena, Barangay officials, AG&P Officers (Richard Reyes, Jeniffer Halili, Leo Salcedo, and Brucal) and the general public. Children rushed the grounds immediately after the ceremonies and scuffled every seat they can occupy to experience the pleasure of riding AG&PFI leisure facilities. According to Pangulo Restie Agena, beside the grounds will also rise the Barangay Day Care Center and (in the near future) their first elementary school. All these, according to Agena, were initiatives instated by AG&PFI to Barangay Sta. Maria, which they are most proud of. 'Manang', Adoring Calingasan, held that they will never, ever forget the charity AG&PFI shared with them for the rest of their lives as these were already 'legacies'.

Coastal Cleaning with AG&PFI

September 20, 2008 ROBERTO S. PAGLINAWAN - AVP OPERATIONS AG&P RENATO M. ALARCON - Executive Director AG&P Foundation BEN S. ACLAN - AG&P Foundation Inc Coordinator REYNALDO S. MENDOZA - Health, Safety & Environment Manager ROSULO P. CARAG - General Services Department LEOPOLDO R. SALCEDO - Barangay Captain – San Roque GEN. BENEDICTO C. CORONA - Community Relations Manager CARLOS P. HUFANA - OIC-Manager AG&P The Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila, Inc. instituted another milestone program for the preservation of life and environment just recently following the Tree planting, Organic Vegetable Farming and Medical & Dental Mission at Barangay San Roque, Bauan, Batangas. In cooperation with the International Coastal CleanUP Organization, the Ocean Conservancy (ICC), the Municipality of Bauan, Barangay San Roque Local Government and AG&P Foundation Inc., The Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Company of Manila Inc. through its Executive Director RENATO M. ALARCON, gathered 15 volunteers to scour the one (1km) kilometer Tabok river banks of San Roque, Bauan. A total of chuck garbage, 1,568 pounds (708 kilos), were gathered by volunteers in 42 duffle bags from the coast of San Andres through the river dividing Barangays Manghinao and San Roque. Disposed were shop-plastics, recede trees, weeds, papers, foods left-over, composed & hygiene products, bottles, cups, ice cream containers, children’s pamphers, aluminum beverage cans, industrial wastes and personal items. Mr. Rosulo P. Carag led the AG&P volunteers to the outskirts of ‘Tabok’ river on September 20, 2008 from 6AM to 11AM. Barangay Captain Leopoldo R. Salcedo joined the team with AG&P Carlos P. Hufana (OIC) and Rogelio Buenafe (Safety), making sure that every inch of the tavern was inspected. Mr. Roger Salamanca assisted Mr. Carag in weighing each duffle bag while Mr. Ben Aclan shoots documentary pictures for the foundation to mark. The AG&P shore and coastal cleaning has always been a part of AG&P’s commitment to environment protection and community relations. Under the guidance of VP for Operations Roberto S. Paglinawan, HSE Manager Reynaldo S. Mendoza and Community Relation’s Manager General Corona, AG&P makes sure that the whole 64 hectare company surrounding is well kept. During the clean up, the team, headed by Mr. Carag discovered 12 turtle eggs, believed to be from the endangered species of the ‘horn faced-turtle’ which can be found only in Asia, buried under three feet of sandy side of the tabok river. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were immediately informed and were invited to come. Although DENR did not come Ms. Jocelyn Lozada (DENR Forester) and Sally LLagas (DENR protection of natural habitat) counseled the team on prime steps of tending the discovery. 6 turtles hatched (September 19 and 20) and immediately escaped the rushing river and five were retrieved for safe keeping by Barangay Captain Leo R. Salcedo. Another hatched in captivity and was immediately soaked in river water to preserve its natural habitat. The eggs and ‘horn faced’ turtle are under the Barangay’s nursing at present time.

Jobs Fair with AG&P 2009

Philippine Daily Inquirer - First Posted 01:07:00 11/12/2008 A big majority of businessmen expect a recession in 2009, a more difficult credit environment, and a reduction in jobs—views that coincide with earlier warnings made by government economic managers about the “challenging” road ahead.
The survey was conducted by the MBC—the umbrella group of the country’s largest corporations—among CEOs and senior executives of its member-firms from Oct. 24 to Nov. 7.
The most alarming concern, it seems, is the expected increase in layoffs, which may happen toward the end of the first quarter of 2009, according to results of the survey. This coincides with the end of the school year when fresh graduates pour into the employment market.
Unemployment will rise, definitely,” MBC executive director Alberto Lim said in an interview. “We graduate about a million [students] into the workforce each year. Where will that million go now?” He said, however, that MBC member-firms had expressed desire to either implement a freeze on hiring or reduce working hours first before moving to more drastic cost reduction measures, like job cuts. (as published) The increasing support-demands for employment on old and new graduates have escalated to an enormous record-high 89% just this year. In Batangas alone 77% of graduates in all academic courses remained unwaged since 2007 to present. 33% were either underemployed or mismatched from accomplished prospectus. This has been the lowest percentage of employment turn out for the past 30 years in Philippine history contrary to some opinionated claims. AG&P participated in AMA computer Jobs fair March 13, 2009 to abate escalation of recession in the region catalyzing youth to participate in PGS programs in skills training as an option over labor mismatch coined by ALCU in the employment summit held in Makati City March 5, 2009. Second year students from AMA region chapters and Batangas City joined the Jobs Fair hoping to be trained under the "alternate-added skills programs" of AG&P Foundation this summer. Computer Technology, Engineering and information Technologies were among the courses mentioned by the Social Weather Station (SWS) to have fallen short on employment this year. Overseas workers return to Philippines empty handed and are now being poised through President Gloria Scholarship (PGS) programs thus bridging the governments views stated in the 2006 Presidential State of the Nation Address to the economic flux. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo unveiled the Super Regions, a development concept aimed at harnessing the natural competitive advantage/s of major areas of the country as well as that of knowledge and technology. She stressed on her SONA that certified graduates should train on becoming call center agents, skilled workers or technicians to keep abreast with the fast changing global skills needs rather than sorting out with less employable trainings and under rated courses. To counter global recession, the country has to provide viable jobs for our people and respond to the demands. Employability is no longer the issue due to the intensifying standards set by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and the government. The availability of jobs and the employment market are the main concerns today which AG&PFI aims to help alleviate through skills training and occupation expediency. AG&P posted needs for Computer programmers, Technicians, Training Instructors of specialized skills, English and Math to start with. Graduates from AMA and ACLC also sat-in during the trade event as audiences to Zaldy Quizon-AGPFI Registrar, Dianne Ozaeta-Advertising and Promotion, Donna Dalagin-AGPFI HRD and Ben S. Aclan-Marketing and Information Officer.

Marketing AG&P Foundation to the World

After three (3) years I found myself still working with AG&P Company of Manila Inc. and yes! It was more challenging than any other companies I've been. I was able to experience several department assignments. First was being training coordinator of HRD, then Training Head, then Sponsorship head, Community relations officer, then, Information Officer and now Marketing Head. In every task and new assignment, I get the pleasure of having to transfer to new offices, each for better and better ambience. I received more privileges and greater responsibilities. Before the end of 2008, I was offered by my boss a Managerial position. I was even given a chance to become ADMINISTRATOR of two AG&P schools which I declined for reasons only I know. Don't ask why please! I chose to stay as Marketing Head because I liked the challenge. I was happy working with AG&PFI. Feeling happy with work iss something I cherish. Respect to work is so important that I am willing to set aside personal motives just to accomplish what are expected of me. I've seen a lot of managers in AG&P frustrate themselves just sitting and doing paper works. I've seen them spent more time going into meetings and workshops that they lose the hunger to improve and grow. I've seen Managers in AG&P work desperately to solve puzzles through books and office works. I've seen Managers come and Go because they were unhappy! I admire some of them for their dedication and hard work but I pity those who wither out because they remained stagnant just wishing to do what they really wanted to do and could not because they were stuck to management unprepared.
I dream of creating a team of Marketing people who will change the entire Marketing rules and dogma in AG&P. Am I too boastful, fresh and arrogant? Maybe, but I have reason to be. If you look deep into AG&PFI you will find there, beside Mr. Renato M. Alarcon and Marcial P. Morales Jr., my name….. Tree planting, Organic Vegetable Planting, Medical Missions, Sewing, Arts and Sciences and Trainings in Welding, Pipe Fitting, Scaffolding, Engineering and the like. The fruits of our hard work and happy life with AG&P. Working with a team of hard working echelons made my heart pound fast wanting to achieve. I am proud to go and meet people, introduce AG&PFI to the world, help people learn and be employed. I love to build families and fulfill dreams of those who fail to reach their impossible dreams. I love to seek sponsors for those who like to learn scaffolding, welding and pipefitting. I love to create and develop. I want to prove to everyone that there is hope with AG&P and as you become part of AG&P's family you can sit back and relax after a day's hard work. I love to see a child smile as he/she sees his/her parent shape the future. I am glad to help those in need over my personal needs and wants.
